Do you remember your Grandparents?

I bring that up because eating those home cooked meals everyday and having dinner together every night was the best part of living at home. My grandparents lived with us and my grandmother did most of the cooking. What I remember is we ate meals together and we ate what was on the menu that day. What ever my grandmother made that day. This was in the 50's and early 60's which probably seems like a century ago to most people, but in fact most seniors grew up the same way. I lived in a suburb of Chicago called Elmwood Park, for those who haven't heard of it, we were next to Oak Park, Opra has a house in Elmwood Park among others. We had a grocery store close by with a meat market. The bakery was one block down. Fruits and vegetables were fresh everyday from nearby farms, nothing was packaged and they delivered your groceries if you asked. Most people didn't drive to the store. There were some restaurants in the neighborhood but not the number that you see today. We ate ...

Dieting is the secret to weight loss

You’ve hear about the French and that the French have a diet that would put weight on any American, but most of them can stay thin. The men and women of all ages in France are thin. When we first looked at their diet we thought that the red wine they drank was the answer. These people eat out as much as we do, they don’t even know what low cal means. So how do they do it? Well first they walk more. City people don’t use cars that much, They walk everywhere. Also bike riding is more popular, you see gasoline has always been expensive in Europe and the people have learned to conserve. Conserving on food is something that France has done since World War II when food was scarce. So today their meal portions are smaller than ours and combine this with the increased amount of walking the French do and it’s much easier for them to control their weight. Now how does that help you? Well there are studies going on today that are discovering that our meal portions maybe double of what we need...

Stop Those Unhealthy Habits and Lose Weight for Good!

You know you want to make a change. You want to see what life is like without extra weight on your body. When I was heavy, I’d think about losing weight every day. I’d skip meals, I’d just drink liquids all day. I tried different quick diets. Nothing worked until I changed my eating habits. I quit eating out, I ate more salads and less red meat. I had to plan out the food I was going to eat that day. Count the calories and then find other things to eat that had no calories like celery. And who knew but celery is really good for you. Map Out Your Route Just like you'd make a plan for a long road trip, you'll want to take time to think about how to map out healthy habits to take you to your goal. Lose fat not muscle. Planning can also get you psyched up about new things to try or doing things you enjoy. Here are tips to help you plan your habits, your support, and your own mindset. Daily planning will help you stick with your plan. Prepare for each destination. Think about ...

Am I Overweight or Obese?

This is a topic I want to write about. There’s a thin line between the two and the doctors are being pushed into putting their patients into categories. Information that use to be between you and your doctor use to be confidential, but today the insurance companies want to know what the doctors know about you. The way insurance companies charge you for insurance is changing. Remember before you dismiss this article, more than half adult Americans are overweight. Personally, I’m talking to each of my doctors to find out how much of my info they share with the government and insurance companies, because I know your insurance company is sharing too. Read below and see if your in one of these categories. Then ask your doctor what your real weight should be, the charts are changing. Doctors usually define "overweight" as a condition in which a person's weight is 10%-20% higher than "normal," as defined by a standard height/weight chart, or as a body mass index (BM...

Hey, you couch potatoes get off that couch.

This article I found is a good reason for men to stay moving even after work. A couch potato even in his 40's can set himself up for a heart problem later in life. You might make it a habit to take a walk after dinner. Thirty minutes at night will help digestion and help you sleep. It a short article with good information. Walking at night will also help your weight management program. Older men who spend a lot of time sitting around are more likely to face heart failure down the road, a new study shows. The research included more than 82,000 men between the ages of 45 and 69. Those who spent more time being sedentary outside of work hours, even if they exercised, had a higher risk for heart failure, reported the researchers from Kaiser Permanente Southern California. "Men with low levels of physical activity were 52 percent more likely to develop heart failure than men with higher levels of physical activity," said study author Deborah Rohm Young, a senior scientis...

Can Leucine Help Me Lose Weight?

Another good article I found that’s definitely worth reading. Most of the work to writing a blog is the research you need to do to stay current. So gathering the material and sorting through to find the good stuff is what I do, This will hopefully save you time and make your life a little easier. I don’t advocate supplements and I wrote about this before. I like to find those foods that actually contain the vitamins or minerals I want, that way I know my body is absorbing what i need. My thoughts have always been that diet is the most important part of losing weight and lost fat is the most important part of losing weight. You have to find ways to maintain muscle mass while the pounds are coming off. What is leucine and why does it matter in your weight loss plan? Leucine is an essential amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Protein helps your body to build and maintain muscle. Your body makes some, but not all, amino acids. Your body does not make leucine...

Why Your BMI Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

You may have heard of BMI -- body mass index. It's based on your height and weight, and it's widely used to say who's obese, who's overweight (but not obese), who's at a normal weight, and who's underweight. But BMI has some drawbacks. It may not be the best way to size up your shape. And it says nothing at all about your fitness level. So how useful is BMI really? And what else might you use? I found this article on WEDMD and it’s well worth reading. I wrote a post a few days ago about BMI and how Doctors and insurance companies use it. So what’s important is that you understand how they’ll use this against you to increase the amount you have to pay. What is BMI? BMI, calculated from a person's height and weight, breaks down into four categories: • Underweight: BMI below 18.5 • Normal: BMI ranging between18.5 and 24.9 • Overweight: BMI ranging between 25 and 29.9 • Obese: BMI of 30 or higher "Probably for 90% or 95% of the population, B...

HOW I CONTROL MY WEIGHT

First, I researched all I could find on "Why the body adds weight?". I found the after adulthood you shouldn't be adding weight.  Ne an adult body even ow that age can vary, I reached full size at the age of 16. And today doctor's say because of the use of hormone in our food, we could have an adult body even earlier. Not really that good, because your organs are still growing and your brains aren't ready for an adult body. Second, I realize some of my weight management is just dumb luck. I use to yo-yo around a lot. You should know the whole story because in my early 20′s I never really tried to maintain my weight or exercise, but in those days I worked blue collar and worked very hard, physical labor. I drove a route truck for Cola-Cola for 5 years, unloading 100′s of case of coke everyday with no helper and working 60 hour weeks. After that, I worked as a laborer and later a labor forman doing heavy construction. Highways, bridges, and underground tu...

The Cost of Being Overweight

Why is this important to anybody? I want to use myself as an example for a minute. I’m over 65 and on Medicare so if you’re on Medicare you understand what I mean. I go to my primary physician twice a year. He checks me over and decides if there’s any change in my condition that he has to be concerned about. If there is then he might send me to a specialist or simply make some suggestions. One time I was in his office and he asked me how long I wanted to live. So I answered that I hoped to live to 90. He asked me if I knew any 90-year-old males that were obese. I immediately said, “why do you think I’m obese”? And he replied quickly that my BMI was over 30 and yes I’m considered obese. But I feel great and yes I know I gained a few pounds but I always do in the winter. He replied that there will come a day when insurance companies and employers will judge you not by your health condition today, but by what your condition might be in the future. After our little discussion I lost...

GET TO A HEALTHY WEIGHT

Image
Don’t Diet, Eat Healthy Dieting is a multi-million dollar business and the idea is to keep you on some kind of fad diet forever. Just keep you spending money on one thing after another. Fad diets will work for a short period of time but you can’t stay on them very long. In a couple of months, you stop losing and begin to drift from the diet and the weight starts to return. And believe me when I say that that’s what they are designed to do. First, change your thinking Dieting will not make you look like your favorite TV star. Losing weight will help you to look like you did when you were in your prime. Today I’m 60 something and I still weight the same as I did in high school. I do a little exercise and some yoga but I’m not a fanatic. I just do what I have to, to maintain my weight and I do Yoga to stay limber. My doctors say my body is much younger than my age. I’m sure I save a lot of money on prescriptions. I don’t need them. If you need to make some lifestyle changes to ge...

What did you do with your Christmas money?

Everyone usually gets some Christmas money. And the big question is “how do I spend it”. Fitness for some of us is our only hobby. We buy equipment, gadgets, and gym memberships. You’ve been thinking about the newest gadget. A fitness tracker, but what kind. You agonized whether you wanted to wear a fitness tracker on your wrist or arm and over its color, you ordered it, you anticipated its arrival, the box arrived, you opened it with excitement and put it on. Now what? First try it on for size. The first week you have a tracker, don’t exercise. It may seem weird, but don’t jump into a new routine. Instead, just wear the device and do what you normally do. That’s how you get your baseline — a snapshot of how much activity you typically get. It may be less than you expect. That’s OK. Knowing your baseline is your first step toward improving it. Keep your baseline. Now that you know your starting point, it’s time to get moving. Set a reasonable goal. Your fitness device might have a d...

DID YOU SEE "GMA" THIS MORNING

On Good Morning American one of the first guests was Cameron Diaz, she brought breakfast for everyone on the desk. They ate Oatmeal with chopped Kale and egg whites. I eat oatmeal in the morning but I never thought of mixing Kale and egg whites in with the oatmeal. I’ll try anything once, so tomorrow I’ll try it. Kale, if you haven’t tried it, is the new lettuce. Kale in your salad, on your sandwich and now in your oatmeal. Personally, I like Kale. Kate was more nutrition than spinach. I always thought eating lettuce was a waste of time, no nutrition. Cameron Diaz is a “health nut” who knows it all when it comes to healthy food. She said that by eating foods with high nutritional value, you will fill up without overeating. I believe this to be true. I believe, and I wrote about this before, that early man first ate what he could forage from the land. As man evolved he found he could eat plants from the sea. Then as man began to travel by boat, he discovered that he could eat fish. ...

JUMP START YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION

Image
This short article from Health Day News Has good ideas about changing your eating habits. Healthier eating, losing weight and getting more exercise are among the most common New Year’s resolutions, and it’s important to make a plan and be patient to achieve these goals, an expert says. If you decide to start eating healthier, it can be difficult to decide where to start. It’s best to focus on specific changes to make your goal more attainable, said Kelly Hogan, a clinical dietitian at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Here are some examples: Replace fried chicken or fish with baked or broiled versions two or three times a week; eat four or five servings of vegetables every weekday; and cook dinner at home three nights a week instead of ordering carry-out food. Instead of cutting out all your nightly desserts, plan to have one small dessert one or two nights per week. This will satisfy your sweet tooth and prevent intense cravings, Hogan said. If you pledge to get more exercise...
