Are You Always Tired?

Image
Tired. Drained. Pooped. No matter how you phrase it, your beat and need to drum up some energy. Generally reported by more women than men, sluggishness can be caused by many things. But experts say poor nutrition is a big culprit. “Food is truly our body’s fuel,” says Cindy Moore, director of nutrition therapy for The Cleveland Clinic. “What we choose as our fuel is going to absolutely impact the performance of our bodies.” Here’s what the experts have to say about making sure your body gets the right fuel when it needs it. The Forgotten Meal At the beginning of the day, most people dash off to work or school without a thought to their body’s dietary needs. Who has time to eat in the morning anyway? Mary Ellen Camire, PhD, professor of food science and human nutrition at the University of Maine says, “Breakfast is an easy meal to forget. But if people are skipping breakfast and find they’re tired by midmorning, then it’s time to re-evaluate breakfast.” Research shows breakfast improves

Stop Worrying About Losing Weight, Lose Your Fat

Nutrition and weight loss go hand-in-hand, and it pretty much comes down to chemistry and math. Consuming too much energy (calories), weight is gained while creating a caloric deficit that stimulates weight loss. Everyone seems to be on the search for something quick and easy. Very Low-Calorie Diets (VLCDs) are popular but disregard possible health risks.  In Other Words, If you're on a diet of hamburgers, pizza, and ice cream, eating less of the same foods won’t help you lose weight.  I am a believer in eating quality food to maintain a fit physique and at a cost-saving. To start a healthy weight loss journey, review what you’re eating now in order to make changes promoting healthy weight loss which is no more than one to three pounds per week. Time for a Lifestyle Change Losing weight is a pretty straightforward process. It will require a nutrition lifestyle change together with regular exercise for the best overall results. Quality healthy food choices are important. If you’re e

One More Party To Go

Image
We got past Christmas, now comes New Year's Eve. I don't really do much eating on New Year's Eve but there are parties. And we are expected to attend. There will be drinks and some food, mostly finger food. I'll tell you how to avoid some of the calories. Most people will avoid food all day so they can splurge that night, don't do it. That's the best way to eat a lot of food that you would never eat normally. Get back to your normal diet right now. I will discard or give away any of those cookies, pies, or cakes I still have in the frig. Yes, I know it's not easy especially if you bought them. If you don't and you eat those desserts you'll hate yourself later. That's way too much sugar. Remember that you can't exercise away a bad diet. Excess calories will turn into fat, you can't avoid it.  I always eat before I go to a party. Sometimes you're expected to eat especially if you have relatives over or you're going to a relative'

It's The Season

It’s the season, and we shouldn’t go hog-wild and overeat or consume too much Holiday Cheer, but we shouldn’t avoid parties and other gatherings because we’re trying not to gain weight. The holidays only come once a year so enjoy it, taste those things you like, just don’t overdo. What helps me keep my weight is at parties and other gatherings I stand as much as possible. Staying on my feet helps me burn more calories. Enjoy the season, be happy, I’ll be back on the downside.

What's Behind The Gluten-Free Trend?

Image
I found this article and had to re-blog it. Today the “gluten-free” sections of the food stores are growing and more and more restaurants have “gluten-free items on the menu. So what’s behind it all? Well, it’s all about the wheat flour used in our food. What we have in our food today is not your Grandmother’s wheat flour. It’s been modified and today’s wheat flour has been accused of being just as bad as sugar for humans. Both man-made products cause the body to crave more food. Not that many years ago, the letters “GF” on a restaurant menu would likely have puzzled many people. No longer. These days, a gluten-free lifestyle has become one of the most popular diet trends in the U.S. One in five people now reduces or eliminates gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, or rye, in their diet, according to a 2015 Gallup poll. Avoiding gluten is crucial for people with celiac disease. That’s because, in them, gluten damages the small intestine, and nutrients can’t be absorbed. Its symptom

The New Year's Resolution

Image
This is the one big promise we make to ourselves every year but seldom keep. I can’t speak for everyone, but for the ones obsessed with losing weight, don’t make that resolution about the bathroom scale. If this is the promise you have been making for years, “this is the year I’m going to lose weight”, it’s time for a change. This year you want to promise you are going to “live a healthier life”. Step off the scale now and no one will get hurt. Focusing just on weight loss can lead to cycles of losing and regaining weight, lower self-esteem, and a preoccupation with food and body image. “You’ll do better if you have goals that have to do not with weight, but with health,” says Carol Landau, Ph.D., clinical professor of psychiatry and medicine at the Alpert Medical School, Brown University. While a New Year’s resolution is a great way to get in touch with what’s important and how you want to change, “Most diets don’t work,” she says. “A focus on weight loss tends to result in a quick-fi

If you can get this right now, your life can be so much better going forward. 10 Ways to Get Lean and Healthy in Your 20s Redefine “skinny.” We often use the word, “skinny,” but let’s face it, ladies, skin, and bones are not sexy. What you really want is a sleek, tight physique. That me

When you begin in the quest to lose weight, it’s normal that you don’t succeed or regain the weight loss because you don’t really understand how the body works and how to lose weight and what to expect. The body is what I call “pre-programmed” to keep you from dying of starvation. This instinct was a necessity millions of years ago because humans were nomads who roamed the earth and ate off the land, not knowing when they would find food again. Humans didn’t become farmers and fishermen for several million years. So adding body fat was not something the body was worried about. It was normal to add body fat before the cold winters. Of course, many of the various civilizations are very thin like The people of North Africa. As we study different civilizations, we can tell that some of them have lived in the same region for thousands of years and their bodies have adapted to the climate. Now how does all this history apply to today and weight loss? Your body will adapt to change but you ha

Secrets To A Longer, Healthier Life

Image
Science and medicine have learned many things from our ancestors. But all they seem to be good at is managing to keep anyone alive no matter how poor their physical condition.   What humans should learn from today’s form of medicine is that we are the ones responsible for keeping ourselves healthy. Yes, medicine can treat the symptoms but isn’t this just like the Monday Morning Quarterback. Wait until the damage is done and then try and fix it or help you deal with your condition. All I ever learned from my doctors is how to control my condition. I had acid reflux a few years ago and my doctor gave me a prescription. He said there wasn’t anything he could do to fix the condition but if I take the one pill in the morning I wouldn’t have acid reflux. He was right but when I asked how long do I have to take the pills, he simply replied ” as long as you have acid reflux, probably forever. What the human race has learned from our ancestors is that smaller, thinner people who stay active liv

This Coming Year Think About Getting Healthy

Image
Some of us get wrapped up in the wrong things in life and we don’t take care of ourselves. How does this happen you might ask. We think that we are multi-taskers but in reality, we aren’t very good at it. We try and do more than we can do and become overloaded. This can happen to anyone, but a lot of us don’t realize it’s happening to them. You can easily analyze your own situation by stepping back for a minute and looking at your life from an outsider's point of view. Are you skipping meals? Do you make time for exercise? How much did you weigh when you got out of High School? How much do you weigh now? Are you eating healthy foods? Are you sleeping 7 hours a night? Often we can find out for ourselves if we have a health problem if we can be objective. Americans often rush through their day so fast just to get it over with and never slow down to see what they’re doing wrong. We cause our own health problems by not paying attention to our body's needs. We constantly ignore our
