Why Can't We Feed School Kids Good Food?

This is more complicated than it might sound. Yes, every Mom wants her kids to eat healthy food at school, so why doesn't the School Board do something to change the food. First of all, just as important is that you provide food that kids want to eat. A few years ago we tried the fruit and vegetable diet at public intercity schools and found that the kids didn't eat the lunches. So what's the answer? I think we should change up the program. I know even though Pizza for lunch is probably the most popular meal in any school, the ready-made, heat-and-serve type of frozen pizza that most schools are serving is loaded with sodium and probably not very good for anyone with a weight problem. I'd like to see more fresh food being served. I would like to see, just a trial, of course, in a few school, baked chicken served cold, with a macaroni salad, made with an olive oil based mayo, tomatoes, and celery. And then a potato salad made the same way. Serve more ice tea and lemona

Can Eating Fewer Calories Extend Your Life?

A calorie-restricted diet helps monkeys live longer, healthier lives, a new study suggests. Previously, research teams from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the U.S. National Institute on Aging (NIA) conducted separate calorie-restricted diet studies on rhesus monkeys. But the two teams had different findings. The conflicting outcomes "cast a shadow of doubt" on how calorie restriction might help to understand aging, said study co-corresponding author Rozalyn Anderson, an associate professor of medicine at UW-Madison. The two teams decided to work together and reviewed the findings from both studies. They concluded that a calorie-restricted diet does help monkeys live longer, healthier lives. But age, diet, and sex must all be factored in to realize the full benefits of lower caloric intake. For example, calorie restriction began at different ages in each study. The collaborative research team saw that calorie restriction was only beneficial for older monkeys.

Why Cutting Calories Can Harm Your Body

In our fast paced society, the Very-Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD) is quickly becoming the chosen fad or method of weight loss. It even comes with a guarantee of shedding those unwanted pounds yesterday. And this is why it may be popular. These very-low-calorie diets promise immediate results. The problem is your cutting out nutrition. You can't retain your energy if you cut out most of your calories. What these diets are trying to do is trick your body into using stored nutrition for energy instead of your food. It usually takes about a week to adjust to the change and go into starvation mode, so they want you to lose the weight that first week and then go off the diet. Then about two weeks later, you can try the diet again.  The problem is most of your weight loss won't be fat, I tried something similar back in the 1990's and I lost 20 pounds but I was still fat. What Happened? Your body will burn whatever it has to, to create the energy you need. Now the secret that no one i

Diet Advertising Is Talking About Your Health

Image
Lately, if you're listening to the TV ads, you might have heard more talk about improving your health.  It's amazing to me that after years of pushing their prepared meals, that now all of a sudden, the ads want you to lose weight to improve your health. Okay, I understand, and I have to defend the advertising because, for decades, the main reasons for losing weight were to look better which will help you at work and in your social life, but I always write about losing weight to feel better physically, and emotionally. Today, advertising is changing because being overweight has become acceptable. Most people have given up on looking better and feeling better and now they just want to get through the next day. So the diet programs trying to sell you something are going in a different direction. Now it's about your "health. "And I say "it's about time." Feeling better physically is all about becoming healthier and when you accomplish that you feel

We Are All Guilty of Eating The Wrong Foods

Image
I believe we are all guilty of running through life so fast that we only think of food as a way to stuff our stomach so it doesn't annoy us. We will stuff anything in our stomach as long as it taste good and fills us up. How dumb is that? We should be thinking about giving our body the things that it needs and then it will definitely leave you alone. It's not all your fault that you think this way. Most of us are in the generation that grew up with processed foods. Students would look for part-time work after school to subsidize their lifestyle. For the last couple of generations, the only jobs available to students were fast-food jobs. So yesterday's kids grew up eating processed foods from the fast food restaurants. Fast food is mostly deep-fried and not really healthy for anyone. For some students, those fast-food jobs carried them through high school and college. By that time, trans fats, and fried foods was an everyday fare. After decades of eating fast food these
