Why Can't We Feed School Kids Good Food?
This is more complicated than it might sound. Yes, every Mom wants her kids to eat healthy food at school, so why doesn't the School Board do something to change the food. First of all, just as important is that you provide food that kids want to eat. A few years ago we tried the fruit and vegetable diet at public intercity schools and found that the kids didn't eat the lunches. So what's the answer?
I think we should change up the program. I know even though Pizza for lunch is probably the most popular meal in any school, the ready-made, heat-and-serve type of frozen pizza that most schools are serving is loaded with sodium and probably not very good for anyone with a weight problem. I'd like to see more fresh food being served. I would like to see, just a trial, of course, in a few school, baked chicken served cold, with a macaroni salad, made with an olive oil based mayo, tomatoes, and celery. And then a potato salad made the same way. Serve more ice tea and lemonade and less sodas. On these days when you serve cold food, don't serve anything fried or deep fried.
Also on Pizza day, I think a product low-in-sodium is worth a try. There must be some healthier choices. Processed foods are all very high in sodium and this is the cause of many health problems. I believe we will discover a decade from now, that we are making a big mistake feeding our kid's processed foods. The health consequences will be discovered 10 years from now.
The only reason public schools haven't changed is because they are waiting for Washington and Washington doesn't know the answer. The fixes we have tried in the past haven't work and the "one fix will fit all schools" isn't going to work and the school districts will have to deal with these problems. But unless the parents get behind a fix and once and for all get rid of the snack machine full of junk food and the soda machines loaded with sugary drinks your kid's health problems will only continue.
We have to put the money factor aside and figure out a way to change the school lunch programs and I'm in favor of scrapping hot lunches. I thought about this for some time and kids like sandwiches for lunch. Most people that eat at Subway are Millenials and that type of sandwich is better than eating burgers or fried chicken. Sandwiches and cold salads could be the answer to a bad problem that's been getting worse for years. But parents need to demand that those snack machines be thrown out. If there is any alternative to the lunch room, kids will take the easy way and the snack machines will become a substitute for lunch.
Why am I spending so much time writing about our kids and the school lunch program? I usually write about losing weight, but this is important to the future of our country and we don't spend enough time thinking about our kid's education when these are the people that will change your world when you are seniors. The kids of today are the future and our government wants to worry about "climate change". If we don't take care of our public schools today we won't have to worry about climate change. This country won't last that long.
