The MIND Diet May Help Prevent Alzheimer’s It's a good post and this kind of diet will keep your mind sharp, and it's great for your overall health, but will it prevent Alzheimer's, I think the jury is still out on that one. By Camille Noe PagánWebMD Feature Reviewed by Neil Lava, MD Want another great reason to eat healthy? The food choices you make daily might lower your odds of getting Alzheimer’s disease, some scientists say. "That statement is the truth; what you eat every day will determine how many health problems you have in the future." Several years of a bad diet can't be erased by a few years of healthy eating. Don't wait to change your diet until after your health is going south. It's true that making changes at any age or in any condition can help your body, but when you start early, before you have health problems you'll make a big difference in your overall health and you may add a few healthy years to your life. We already know that we as a nation dine out too much and too often, and the consumption of fast food in particular has been linked to the obesity epidemic. Now researchers are discovering even more benefits of eating at home. Benefits of Eating at Home A study presented at the 2015 American Heart Association meeting in Orlando found that both women and men who prepared meals at home were less likely to gain weight. They were also less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. Specifically, the researchers, including lead author Geng Zong, PhD, research fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, found that people who ate an average of 11 to 14 lunches and dinners prepared at home each week had a 13% lower risk of developing obesity and Type 2 diabetes as compared with those who ate zero to six home-prepared lunches and dinners. These results were reported at the meeting to be based on data accumulated from nearly 100,000 health professionals over 26 years.

Health Tip: Exercising for Seniors

Most people in my generation never stayed with the exercise routine and you can tell from the physical condition of most seniors today. Some seniors have done more to stay healthy and fit and it shows on those people. Will High Blood Sugar Keep You From Losing Weight?

Image
Are you eating healthier and getting more active, but  still not  losing any weight? I’ve got great news, and it comes from an unlikely source. Diabetes researchers just uncovered a weight-loss roadblock: High blood sugar is hijacking your weight loss. It doesn’t matter how much you exercise, or how healthy you eat… “If your blood sugar is high, it’s almost  impossible  to lose weight.” Think it might be high blood sugar that’s keeping you fat? Here’s a few ways to tell: You get tired easily You’re frequently thirsty A rapid heartbeat Dry skin You have a hard time concentrating Shortness of breath. If you ever experience one or more of these symptoms, it could be high blood sugar that won’t let you lose weight. I wrote about blood sugars before because a spike in blood sugars can cause food cravings and stimulate your appetite when your not really hungry forcing you to overeat and add more body fat. The problem with food cravings is that we will often

Do Your Homework to Lose Weight

Food is Health; Exercise is Fitness The way I see it is this; Food is Health, Exercise is Fitness. You need both. It's simple really. Eat good food everyday, move your body every day and health can be yours. Remember that little (yet extremely powerful) saying from Hippocrates, "Food is Thy Medicine?" Well, I've seen it first hand in my life. When I began to change my diet many years ago and eat healthy, it changed how I felt physically, my energy levels went through the roof and I was sleeping better and had more balanced moods. It is possible to prevent future health problems through eating a whole food diet, and very possibly reverse some of your current health issues. Incorporating Whole Foods Into Your Life I do my best to stay away from any food that comes in a bag, box or can that has more than 4 ingredients. Processed food is  frankenfood . It's not real. It's not good for you. And it provides nearly no nutritional value.

Weight Loss and Body Mass Index

For those that are having trouble losing weight, you have to look beyond the simple "cutting calories" method to lose weight. An in-depth look at how the body loses weight, is really about losing body fat. Depending on the amount of fat you have, there will be a different approach to your weight loss journey. We all just can't cut out 1 meal a day and lose weight. Or maybe you have even tried cutting out 2 meals and still can't lose. Well, It's true that you do have to cut your calories every day but you don't have to starve. More of us that need to lose fat are eating high calorie foods that add body fat. So for those people changing to low-cal diet should work for you. That means you can eat most things if they are low in calories. For instance, if your choosing meat for dinner, Choose a chicken breast instead of fried chicken wings dipped in sauce. Those chicken wings at WingStop might be 1000 calories but the chicken breast salted without dipping sauce

Stress and Obesity

A great deal of research has looked at, and found, a connection between chronic stress and weight gain. Over time, this can lead to overweight and obesity in previously normal-weight individuals. Craving Comfort Food As it turns out, that craving we sometimes have for “comfort food,” also known as emotional eating, has a biological basis. Researchers have found that a chronic stress-response network gets activated by our bodies within a matter of days when faced with perceived stress, whether that be emotional, mental, or physical stress or a combination of the above. As part of this response, biological pathways involving stress hormones and stress-related factors are activated. One category of stress-related substances are glucocorticoids, a form of steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands; these play a particular role in food cravings. High concentrations of glucocorticoids can motivate consumption of “comfort food,” which is often high in refined carbohydrates, added s
