Why Keep a Food Log
Eating the right food is the most important part of losing body fat. If you have excess body fat now, it's because the food your eating is adding that extra fat. Our bodies were never designed to carry extra body weight. You should only have about 15% to 20% body fat to protect your organs and joints from bruising. Once you reach 25% body fat your considered overweight. So how is this number calculated? There's actually two ways to find your number. The old school way is to use a body fat caliper like the one I bought on Amazon.com for less than $10. Some Health Clubs use them to measure a member's progress or to show a prospective member how much he or she has to lose. Your gym won't charge you for using their caliper.
The other way is less accurate but widely used by the medical community because its quick and easy and the doctor or insurance company doesn't need to see the patient. It's called the BMI method. Or Body Mass Index and they calculate your number by using your height and weight. I know it sounds simple to do yourself but it's not. It was devised by England during the 1950's and is now used in this country just to make the doctor's job easier. Your height and weight have to be changed into metric before you can use the formula. But today we have computers so you can find a website with a BMI calculator and you just plug in a couple of numbers and you have your BMI.
The problem with BMI is that it doesn't know how much muscle mass you have. An athlete who is bulked up with muscle because of the sport they're in could seem overweight but actually has no fat or little fat. If possible use a caliper to find your number. You can have too much body fat and not even be overweight. That can still be a health risk.
Food Logs can help you track the foods and drinks you consume every day. Losing body fat is a trial and error method and you should be discouraged if you have found the right plan for you. It would be easy if we could just use a weight loss plan that someone else used and liked, but it probably wouldn't work for you. Because all of us process food differently and we have different blood types and DNA, we can't all eat the same thing and lose weight.
A food log will help you find what you're doing wrong or what you did right. The food you eat is what will help you lose body fat. Exercise can increase the speed it takes to lose that fat, but it's only your diet that will trim and shape the body.
