The Cost Of Being Overweight

Image
Why is this important to anybody? I want to use myself as an example for a minute. I’m over 65 and on Medicare so if you’re on Medicare you understand what I mean. I go to my primary physician twice a year. He checks me over and decides if there’s any change in my condition that he has to be concerned about. If there is then he might send me to a specialist or simply make some suggestions. One time I was in his office and he asked me how long I wanted to live. So I answered that I hoped to live to 90. He asked me if I knew any 90-year-old males that were obese. I immediately said, “why do you think I’m obese”? And he replied quickly that my BMI was over 30 and yes I’m considered obese. But I feel great and yes I know I gained a few pounds but I always do in the winter. He replied that there will come a day when insurance companies and employers will judge you not by your health condition today, but by what your condition might be in the future. After our little discussion I lost

Avoid "Empty" Calories

Image
Dieting is hard. But avoiding "empty" calories helps you reach a healthy weight without feeling like you're dieting. Your body needs a certain amount of energy each day. Energy comes from food in the form of calories. Calories let you function and keep doing your daily activities. But after your body meets its needs, it stores extra calories as fat. Most of us get plenty of calories in our diet—often too many. Foods with empty calories have lots of calories but very few nutrients like vitamins and minerals. "Convenience foods," like packaged snacks, chips, and sodas, are common sources of empty calories. Nutrient-rich foods, on the other hand, have a lot more nutrients in relation to their calories. A few examples are vegetables, peanut butter, bran cereal with fruit, and fish. Tips for avoiding empty calories Instead of this: Choose this: Sugar-sweetened drinks like soda, energy drinks, and sweetened coffee drinks, not good. Water, no-sugar-added fruit

What Is A Healthy Weight?

Image
I don't have a simple answer for that question. A healthy weight for anyone is constantly changing. Being at a healthy weight is really about how much body fat you have. If your Body Mass Index is lower than 25 then you're at a healthy weight. You can't look at the scale and see your healthy weight. Your Body Mass Index is an indicator of the percentage of body fat you have. Look up Body Mass Index on the web and there are several websites that will show you a formula to use to find your number. If your number is between 18 and 24 then you are at a healthy weight. If your number is more than 24, you're overweight. I'm not a fan of this way of measuring body fat. If you belong to a health club or know someone that can take you, they measure body fat with a caliper. You can even buy a "body fat caliper" on the web. I read somewhere that you can buy one on Ebay for about $8. A health club will measure you free of charge. The think the old school method of

Getting To A Healthy Weight

We’re finding more and more that our body will do the healing if we eat the proper foods. For instance, on the Today Show, Dr. Oz was demonstrating how cancer grows in your body and that we all have these cancer cells but because some people aren’t getting a proper amount of certain foods, the cancer cells will grow and keep growing until we can detect them. Celery, onions, and Leeks will stop cancer cells from growing, but you need to eat them 5 times a week. Remember we all have these cells, we need to stop them before they are large enough to be detected. And He also said that medicine has nothing that will do this.  Similar remedies can solve most of our bodies problems. Some problems we know how to solve, but we still have to rely on medicine for most of the remedies. Today we’ve gotten away from eating the way our grandparents ate. In countries where people still eat fresh foods every day, you don’t have the large amount of illness that we see in our urban cities.  Maybe

What You Need To Know About Calories

Image
By  Shereen Lehman  - VeryWell.com Take it from this expert, she does the research. I wrote several blog posts about calories. I believe that not all calories are equal and by merely cutting calories is not going to give you permanent weight loss. For example, if I eat Pizza and ice cream and through in some donuts every day, then decide I have to lose weight and I cut back on my calories but continue to eat the same food, I'm not going to become slimmer or healthier. So, I can't agree with everything this author is saying. Q: What is a calorie? In science, a calorie is a unit for measuring energy. It's equal to the amount of heat needed to raise one liter of water one degree. What we call 'calories' in nutrition and fitness are actually kilocalories, which are equal to 1,000 calories. We use them to represent the amount of energy available in food and beverages. You use that energy to fuel the various physiological processes that occur inside your body a

Why Keep a Food Log

Image
Eating the right food is the most important part of losing body fat. If you have excess body fat now, it's because the food your eating is adding that extra fat. Our bodies were never designed to carry extra body weight. You should only have about 15% to 20% body fat to protect your organs and joints from bruising. Once you reach 25% body fat your considered overweight. So how is this number calculated? There's actually two ways to find your number. The old school way is to use a        body fat caliper like the one I bought on Amazon.com for less than $10. Some Health Clubs use them to measure a member's progress or to show a prospective member how much he or she has to lose. Your gym won't charge you for using their caliper. The other way is less accurate but widely used by the medical community because its quick and easy and the doctor or insurance company doesn't need to see the patient. It's called the BMI method. Or Body Mass Index and they calculate you

The Eating-Clean Diet Review

Image
The Eating Clean Diet is relatively new and it's in book form if you're like to buy it. Basically, Clean-Eating is eating form that is as close as possible to it's original form. You want the food to look like it came straight off the bush or tree. Straight from the butcher that cut that piece of meat right in front of your eyes. Now I know that's not easy to do today, especially if you live in the city. No frozen food, no canned food, no processed foods, or manufactured foods. You eat fresh, foods as close as possible to it's natural state. This author means eating foods -- like lean protein, good-for-you carbs and fats, fresh fruits, and vegetables -- six times a day in the right amounts. Do that, drink lots of water, and exercise regularly, and Reno says you’ll turn your sluggish metabolism into a fat-burning machine. I'm adding my own opinion, but this worked for me. I dropped about 15 pounds in just about 6 weeks and I wasn't overweight, I just had t
