Understanding Obesity

Most Americans don't really understand what it means to be Obese, doctors say. Obesity doesn't really mean that you weigh too much. When you look at a chart of a person's height, for each height there is a range that you can weigh and still be considered normal. For instance, I'm 6 foot tall, and I can weigh anywhere between 145 to 195 and still be considered normal. That's because small-boned men might not be able to carry as much weight as large-boned men. Also, the man with more muscle mass will weigh more just because muscle mass weighs more than fat. Obese is actually determined by the difference between your muscle mass and your body fat. Body mass is the difference between your total weight and the weight of your bones plus your organs. Once you know what your body mass is if more than 30% of your body mass is body fat you are obese.

For example, two men both 6 foot tall, both weigh 180 pounds but the muscular man is slimmer and wears smaller size pants and the other man, the same height and weight is Obese because he has much more body fat, and his waist is 4 sizes larger, and he's shaped like a pear. Both men are not overweight if you just look at the charts, but when interviewing in person each man it's evident that the second man needs to lose weight. Or does he? His weight isn't the problem, he has to lose the fat. It's his body fat that puts him at risk, not his weight.

Your doctor can tell you your percentage of body fat or if you are a gym member, they will calculate your percentage of body fat for you. So why is that important? If you have 30% or more body fat you are considered Obese. The scale for women isn't the same as for men. Women on average will carry more body fat than a man. Men are more at risk for several types of disease because of excess body fat, whereas women are protected from some of those weight problems.

You can cure the fat problem by changing your diet. Increasing your vegetables and fruits and cutting back on red meat. I had to cut out dairy products for several months until I lost my fat and then I returned to a small amount of dairy, more eggs than I used to eat before the diet, and fewer carbs than before the diet. I try and avoid restaurant food now. Maintaining has been easier than I thought. I have a new way of eating. Low-carb has been the best way for me.
