How We Shorten Our Life Span

In the next few posts, I'll give you tips on how to live longer. Below is the first tip, This is something you probably know but I want you to know how important these tips can be.

According to a 2021 study in the journal Aging, these include:13

Prolonged sitting: Loss of 2-4 years

High blood pressure: Loss of 4-5 years

Being chronically underweight: Loss of 4-8 years

Smoking: Loss of 5-7 years

Alcohol abuse: Loss of 5-7 years

Physical inactivity: Loss of 5-7 years

Type 2 diabetes: Loss of 7-10 years

By having several co-occurring risk factors, you compound the risk. For example, inactive people with diabetes and obesity have anywhere from an 8- to 13-year loss of life.

How Lifestyle and Habits Affect Biological Aging

Before you read further, we have two different ages. Chronological age and a Biological age. The first is the age we track on a calendar. Your biological age is the age of your body which can age must faster or slower than the one you track on a calendar. I'll be 80 next year and I still ride a mountain bike, My neighbor that I ride with is 85 this year. We ride about 10 miles in about one hour. I do yoga a few days a week and do some bodyweight exercises. My neighbor was playing golf until recently but he had trouble with a roter cup in one shoulder and decided to retire from golf.

Get Health Screenings and Tests

Keeping on top of your health is key to ensuring your optimal life expectancy. This means seeing your healthcare provider at least once yearly for a comprehensive physical exam and evaluation.

If you have one or more chronic medical conditions, you may need to see your provider more often or see other specialists to ensure your medications are working and the goals of treatment are being met.

In addition, you need to get your recommended vaccines, including annual ones like the flu and COVID shots and scheduled ones like the shingles and meningococcal vaccines.

Routine screenings are needed based on your age and sex. This may include mammograms, colonoscopies, Pap smears, and STI screenings.

The key to longevity is to stay on top of your health. No one will do it for you.
