The Truth About Red Meat
Yes, I’m one of those who receive AARP mags every month. For the first couple of years, I never admitted it but now I’m coming out of the closet. In December the mag had this article about meat in your diet. It’s important because we all eat meat but if you're one of those meat eaters you want to read the article.
For years the Food and Drug Administration has been preaching to cut back on red meat or beef in general. They always maintained that cardio diseases, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, and several other types of cancer including Breast Cancer in women are caused by eating red meat.
This most recent study didn’t refute the claims but said we can go ahead and eat red meat anyway. Since the study was published doctors have come out against the study and said that the new study red meat with a method called GRADE which was designed to be used in drug trials and not food. Doctors refute the results and argue that the study isn’t valid.
So I conclude that the Mediterranean-style diet is still the best food plan and I have followed it for years with great results.
In the same issue of this mag, I found another article about small corners of the world where people actually live longer than the rest of us. These places are known as “blue zones”. A blue zone is a region on earth where there are more centurions or people living over 100 than in the rest of the world.
The best-known place is a small island in Japan, the southernmost island. It’s mostly a farming and fishing community; if you can’t guess it’s Okinawa. Another is a peninsula in southwest Costa Rica. A third is Sardinia, Italy.
These three around have a few things in common. The first is that the people are more active than most North Americans. They don’t have all the modern conveniences that we have. They grow their own produce and eat mostly seafood, rice, and vegetables.
By keeping your diet simple you can avoid a lot of digestive problems and many of the common illnesses we have.
Also because of their diet, they stay thin throughout their life which also helps them avoid lots of diseases.
If you want to lose weight it might be a good idea to keep your menu simple, even boring and maybe you too can get rid of all those pills.
