Losing Weight Without Dieting

I wrote about this last month but the topic always brings in a lot of emails to my box so I want to write another post.

It’s true, you don’t have to diet to lose weight. Some of us have such a bad diet that what we really need to do is overhaul our diet completely. So what I mean is that some of us are on a steady diet of processed foods just for convenience. Convenience is a big problem, and how do we overcome this way of eating when we have no time to cook?

First of all, you don’t have to cook to make a meal. I eat very few hot meals. The big change for me was learning to eat what was good for my body and stopping eating the comfort foods I like. Another big change I had to make was to stop drinking calories.

Now you might wonder how you are going to make this miraculous change. I’m going to give you a few tips.

This is a chart of whole foods, you start by only buying whole foods. If you notice there are no boxes or cans. I do make exceptions for some frozen food.

I have seen vacuum-packed, frozen fish in the supermarket. These fish are packed and frozen the same day or the day after they’re caught, they will actually be fresher than the fish at the seafood counter at your store. Another exception and you might be surprised but canned Tuna is packed straight off the boat and is an excellent source of protein. Another exception I make is frozen blueberries. It’s a great fruit, very healthy without any additives. Good with plain Greek yogurt. Don’t buy anything but plain Greek Yogurt and add what you want, either berries or honey.

At first glance, you might think this is a pretty expensive way to eat, but it’s really not. If you notice, there are no bakery goods, there is bread in the food pyramid, and no snack foods except nuts. The cheapest way to buy nuts is peanuts in the shell. I buy ground-up peanuts in the bulk food section of my supermarket. It’s the same as peanut butter but has no additives. A word about bread, bread is made with enriched wheat flour.  You want to avoid anything made from flour. Not all flour is bad for your diet but any flour with processed or enriched wheat flour is to be avoided. At first, you might think that gluten-free breads or cookies might be good for your diet but the calorie count is usually very high. Manufacturers do that to give the product flavor. So gluten-free bread might be a better choice but eat only in small amounts.

So the answer to losing weight is to lose your fat and you can do that by not eating fat. But not all fat is bad. There are fats in nuts and olives that are good fats. There are fats in seafood that are good fats. Both should be a bigger part of your new diet. By only eating whole foods and stopping drinking calories your body will begin to function better and start to burn your body fat. Over time you’ll start to notice that you’re not eating as much because you're not always hungry. Eating nothing but whole foods will satisfy the body and you won’t have those food cravings.

This won’t happen overnight but in time, depending on you and your activity level it might take three months to notice a difference. Naturally the more you cheat the longer it will take.
