Advice for Seniors

I’ve received email lately from seniors that don’t seem to think they can lose weight anymore. We can all lose weight at any age. We can all exercise at any age. You just need to start moving. Change what your eating and start walking more. Seniors have a couple of problems losing weight.

First, as you get older you lose some of the good bacteria in your digestive system which means that more of your food is not being digested. It’s being stored as fat. Cut down portions as you get older. Second and more important, I think, as we age and gain weight over time, we lose the ambition to be active. We have a few more aches and pains and instead of working through them, we tend to pamper them. Some people take a pill for any minor problem, when all you might need is exercise. I'm not talking about a high intensity aerobics class, I'm talking about more walking around and less sitting. Maybe that means to start the day with a walk after breakfast and another walk after lunch and another after dinner. It doesn't have to be an hour walk, you do what you can today and maybe tomorrow you can do a little more. I'm not talking about speed walking, just a casual walk.

If you are gaining weight as you age, your feet, knees and hips are starting to ware down causing pain. Also arthritis is setting into joints making them stiff. Once these affects start to change your body most people loss the willingness to maintain their body and that’s when you will truly become a senior.

This doesn’t have to happen to you. Actually as you age you should be losing 10% of your weight every decade. This will keep your joints from waring out. And by reducing your weight you’ll have more energy so you can stay active.

Doctors today are more into prevention than just treating the symptoms. Hospital chains and clinics have websites that promote good health, losing weight and being active.
Medicine is changing and if you really want to lose weight your doctor is the best place to start.

I read today in Sundays paper that a company called FitDesk makes desks for the workplace that adjust in height so you can stand at your desk or adjust it for a treadmill or stationary bike. I read about this a couple years ago. A California insurance company tried an experiment in one department changing all the desks to standup desks with treadmill. You could walk if you wanted, at the speed you wanted for two hours in the morning and then some time in the afternoon it you want. Work at your desk and keep moving at the same time. Wow! What an idea. No one was walking fast, that’s not the object, just move while you work.

The results after 6 months were that those who participated actually lost weight, were more productive and wanted to stay with the program. I haven’t read anymore about it but I thought it was a good idea.
Seating all day at a desk can’t be good for your back or your circulation.  Sitting in a cushy chair might feel good, but sitting for long periods of time isn’t good for your body or your health.

I use a standup desk at home, use the computer standing and write my blog standing. My wife is my age, works retail and stays on her feet for the 4 to 6 hours she works.    She use the island in the kitchen as her desk.I think it helps her maintain her weight and keeps her fit by spending most of her day on her feet.

Standing and moving all day is something you have to build up to. Being more active is good for your circulation and your joints. You will get use to it and you’ll be more productive. Just think about all the people that work retail and never sit except for breaks or lunch.

If you’ve already gain weight it won’t be easy to become more active. You want to change your diet first and start walking more and get some of that weight off. As you lose weight you will have more energy. Remember though, and this is were your diet will play a role, you need a high protein diet to give you that energy.

Search the web for a high protein diet that's right for you.
