How Often Should You Weigh Yourself?

Image
Imagine this: You decide it’s time to make a concerted effort to lose weight. You start exercising regularly and embark on a healthy eating plan. The time comes to check in on your progress, so you step on the scale for the moment of truth. You haven’t lost any weight. What do you do? Continue with the exercise and healthy eating plan? Throw in the towel, and go back to what you were doing before? Start restricting your eating even more as an effort to make weight loss happen faster? The truth is that weight loss isn't going to happen faster. Restricting food isn't a good idea, you only lose energy. Energy you need to workout. When you first start a weight loss program it may take a few weeks for your body to adjust to your new diet. You can put your body in hibernation mode by cutting out meals or restricting food. So, you have to eat healthy, fresh foods to give you energy and with more energy, you can workout longer and that will help you lose weight faster. Have

What a Healthy Breakfast Looks Like

Image
Planning a daily menu isn't difficult as long as each meal and snack have some protein, fiber, complex carbohydrates and a little bit of fat. Here's one example of how to prepare a healthy menu for a whole day that includes three meals and three snacks. Eating breakfast will help you start your day with plenty of energy. Don't ruin your breakfast with high-fat and high-calorie foods. Choose some protein and fiber for your breakfast, and it's a good time to eat some fresh fruit: One serving of oatmeal. One-half cup strawberries. A tablespoon or two chopped nuts. A glass of orange juice. A mid-morning snack is totally optional. If you eat a larger breakfast, you may not feel hungry until lunchtime. However, if you're feeling a bit hungry and lunch is still two or three hours away, a light mid-morning snack will tide you over without adding a lot of calories: One serving of plain yogurt mixed with one-half cup blueberries and a little honey. Water or diet soda

Could You Be Addicted To Junk Food?

Image
You think that being addicted to food is just a myth? You think that it's only people without will-power that can't stop eating? Well, it's not a myth. I found this post in WebMd.com and thought I needed to reblog it. Many of us don't realize that the food cravings they have might be more than just a craving and that their overweight problem is not really their fault. Processed foods contain chemicals and if you eat processed foods all day, day after day, you can become chemical dependent or addicted to those chemicals.  Most all processed foods contain the same chemicals that are used to flavor and preserve the food. Small children can easily form a dependence to these foods and can become cranky and irritable for no apparent reason. It's very obvious in the case of sugar, but this can be the result of other chemicals too. Most processed foods have hidden sugar which means a sweetener with a different name, usually a chemical name, so you don't know what it

How to Get Active at Any Age

Image
You're not as young as you once were, and you're still looking for an exercise routine that works. Or maybe you think you're too old to bother. Not so. It's never too late in life to get started, according to Joan Pagano, author of 8 Weeks to a Younger Body. If you want to be healthier, you need to eat the right way and be more active. The key may be to start small and work yourself up. No-Gym Strength Exercises, Pagano recommends these four moves. You can do the whole routine in about 5 minutes. Squat. Stand in front of a chair, arms forward at shoulder level. Inhale as you bend at the knees and lower yourself as if you were going to sit down -- just enough to touch the chair. Exhale and return to standing. Only go part of the way down until your knees warm up if your knees are uncomfortable or stiff, It may take a couple of weeks before you can do the exercise properly. Aim to do this move 10-15 times. "This is the No. 1 exercise for life," Pagano say

Getting Older and Gaining Weight

Image
When I was in my 20s, I believed that aging was a natural process that one should let happen, naturally. Why should people cover their gray or try to 'stay cool' by wearing hip clothes? They should just let things happen without fighting it. Twenty-something years later, I suddenly understand that the 'natural process of getting older' is like take a long walk off a short pier. There are some things we can't control as we get older, but one thing we can do something about is our weight. Our bodies may change, but there is something we can do about weight gain. Why We Gain Weight As We Age Most people think that gaining weight and getting older go hand in hand, but the reason we gain weight isn't just about getting older, it's about how our habits change. Many of us gain weight because we: Become more sedentary (we are less active) Don't lift weights to maintain muscle mass (your muscles get flabby) While there are some elements we can't contro

This Year Think About Being a Healthier Person

Image
Some of us get wrapped up in the wrong things in life and we don't take care of ourselves. How does this happen you might ask. We think that we are multi-taskers but in reality we aren't very good at it. We try and do more than we can do and become overloaded. This can happen to anyone, but a lot of us don't realize it's happening to them. You can easily analyze your own situation by stepping back for a minute and looking at your life from an outsiders point of view. Are you skipping meals? Do you make time for exercise? How much did you weight when you got out of High School? How much do you weigh now? Are you eating healthy foods? Are you sleeping 7 hours a night? Often we can find out for ourselves if we have a health problem if we can be objective. Americans often rush through their day so fast just to get it over with and never slow down to see what they're doing wrong. We cause our own health problems by not paying attention to our bodies needs. We co
