The Truth About Beet Juice

Image
Only the last few weeks have I saw Beet Juice in the stores, but maybe I haven't paid attention. Beet Juice seems to be a new drink that's caused a lot of stir in the natural juices community. I recently changed my grocery store. Now I frequent a smaller store with lots of "organic" produce, organic coffees and an endless supply of organic yogurt with brands I never heard of. I always thought milk was milk, except for Soy Milk, but now there are a dozen brands of milk and none of them come from a cow.  I have to admit that I drink the Almond Milk but I've been tempted to try the Coconut Milk. And like most everyone trying to lose weight, I eat Greek Yogurt. But getting back to juices, the store must have a hundred different kind of natural juices all in small bottles. Every kind of fruit or vegetable that you can possibly squeeze juice from. Beet Juice is the new health drink that's good for your blood pressure.  But will it help you lose weight? No, bu

Will Eating Fruits and Vegetables Help You Lose Weight

If you don't reduce your calorie intake, you won't slim down, researcher warns Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is often recommended as a way to lose weight, but doing so may not help you shed excess pounds, according to researchers. They reviewed data from more than seven studies that examined how increased fruit and vegetable consumption affected weight loss. "Across the board, all studies we reviewed showed a near-zero effect on weight loss," Kathryn Kaiser, an instructor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said in a university news release. "So I don't think eating more [fruits and vegetables] alone is necessarily an effective approach for weight loss because just adding them on top of whatever foods a person may be eating is not likely to cause weight change," she added. "Overly simplified messages don't seem to be very effective," she added. However, Kaiser and her colleagues also

Choosing A Weight Loss Program

When you're looking for a weight loss program, it's wise to look for one that will meet your needs and set you up for long-term success. In general, look for programs that focus on steady weight loss -- about 1-2 pounds a week. While you're choosing a program, ask these questions: Does the staff include qualified counselors and health professionals such as registered dietitians, doctors, and exercise physiologists? How limited are the food choices? Who sets your weight loss goal: you, or someone else? What percentage of people complete the program? What is the average weight loss among people who finish the program and at one year? What percentage of people have problems or side effects? What are those problems? Is there a maintenance program to help keep the weight off once you lose it? Maintaining weight loss is important, so there should be a plan for this. What is the total cost, including any foods or supplements that are required? If you plan to

The Sugar They Don't Tell You About

Did you know that there are 3 letters on food labels that you MUST avoid, especially if they're at the beginning of the list of ingredients? Those letters are OSE. Let me explain. You see, spotting sugar on food labels isn't quite as easy as it once was. Yep, now that food manufacturers are aware that consumers of the current day are much more discerning than those of yesteryear, they're doing everything they can to disguise sugar on their lists of ingredients. These days, it's not likely that you'll see "sugar" at the forefront of an ingredients list, but instead you'll see these code names: fructose maltose glucose sucrose And the worst of the worst, high fructose corn syrup. If you see any of the above -ose words in the first 3 or 4 ingredients on a food label, rest assured that product is LOADED with sugar and you should be avoiding it. The reason to avoid them is because these are sugar substitutes and there a lot more dangerous to

Exercise for age 50+

Get active. It's one of the best things you can do for yourself. “Exercise is an antidote to aging," says Barry A. Franklin, PhD. He is director of cardiac rehabilitation and exercise labs at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. A well-rounded routine, as part of a healthy lifestyle, may help you avoid things like falls, heart disease, and osteoporosis. In fact, experts say, many of the conditions people think are due to getting older have more to do with not moving enough. At any age, these are the types of exercise you want to get: • Aerobic: good for your heart and lungs • Strength training: good for your muscles and bones • Flexibility and balance: helps prevent falls Personally, I want to add a few words about me. I live in a single family home in a 55+ community. My wife and I are very happy here. Most of the people are are age but only half those living here are truly in good shape. There are many activities for people of all ages like book clubs, card games f

Eat Your Medicine

Food is the most powerful medicine available to heal chronic disease. All you need to do is think of your grocery store as your pharmacy. I found this article on a website I read occasionally. This will open your eyes to the importance of eating a healthy diet. Recently I went to Asia to lecture on prevention, wellness, nutrition and the new field of nutrigenomics, the science of how molecules in food interact with our genes to support or interfere with our health. We are learning from research in this field that food “talks” to our DNA, switching on or off genes that lead to health or disease. What you eat programs your body with messages of health or illness. I came away from Asia feeling humbled and awed as I realized that the average Chinese person knows more about the medicinal properties of food than I do after years of research. Medicinal foods are part of their every day diet. Dinner with my hosts included mild, crunchy white tree fungus, bai mu er,which enhances detoxif

Low Levels Of Vitamin D Can Keep You Fat

Image
This is interesting, I just read that low levels of vitamin D in your system can actually keep overweight people from losing weight. O.K., we know now that we can get vitamin D from the sun, but that dark skinned people and even people with a dark tan won't absorb as much "D" as light skinned people. Vitamin D from the sun is a bonus anyway, the sun can't give you too much. So now your diet and supplements will become important. The body needs vitamin D, it's important for weight loss, but also helps to ward off a long list of diseases including cancer. So how do we put more vitamin D in our diet? Diary products and eggs all contain "D". Some fish and vegetables contain Vitamin D and supplements in the vitamin section of your drug store or grocery store. Food is really the best way for your body to absorb any vitamin. There are foods like salmon and egg yolks that contain "D" naturally and some like milk and cheese that are fortified with v
