Diet vs. Exercise: The Truth About Weight Loss

Image
I read this post on WebMd. I had to reblog this because it says things that women want to know. I know it might sound crazy but most of my readers are young women or maybe I should say, most of the emails I receive from my readers come from young women. By Alia Hoyt @WebMd I admit it: I was once one of “those women” for whom post-pregnancy weight loss was relatively quick and painless. I’ve never been model-skinny, but after the birth of my first two children my previous waistline was recovered with little to no effort. Yeah, I know what you want to call me, and I don’t blame you. So kick back and laugh when I tell you that the pounds decided they wanted to take up permanent residence after my third son was born. No amount of calorie counting or exercise did the trick, which threw me for a tailspin worse than those teacups at Disney World. Most exercise programs promise extreme results just by going through the motions. But great results can only be achieved by also overhauling...

How This Women Lost 100 Pounds

Image
I had to post this story for my readers who haven't read this before. Lacing up her shoes, strapping on her GPS watch, and heading out on a long run are things 26-year-old Rebecca, the blogger behind My Girlish Whims, has come to appreciate. In January 2014, it was a different story—she weighed 246 pounds, and running was something she avoided. But that month she booked a summer vacation to Jamaica and decided she wanted to shape up. “I didn’t want to go on the trip, come back and look at pictures from my fun tropical vacation and not be able to remember how much fun I had [because of my weight],” she says. Along with a healthy, balanced diet, one major change she made was she decided to start running regularly—even though she  hated  it. “I was the girl in high school who huffed and puffed around the track  every year  in gym class when we were forced to run one mile,” she recalls. These days, her trail runs and treadmill ...

Why Fad Weight Loss Diets Usually Backfire

Image
A post from the VeryWell.com site.  Ever wonder why it's nearly impossible to stay on a diet and lose weight? There are many reasons most diets don't work and even more reasons to give up dieting forever and get on with your life. If you've tried more diets than you remember, it's time to give it up once and for all and reach your goals the old fashioned way: with a little exercise and some small changes. 1 They're Hard to Stick To The problem with most weight loss diets is they're too specific to fit our lives. They tell you what to eat and how much, but don't take into account individual preferences, lifestyle, time constraints and likes and dislikes. Plus, they throw so much change at us that they're nearly impossible to follow for a long period of time. Remember that weight loss is a lifestyle thing. The exception are diets that are more flexible, such as Weight Watchers (read ConsumerSearch's detailed review of Weight Watchers), whi...

Why Does My Weight Fluctuate From One Day To the Next?

Image
Fluctuations are normal, for women more than men, but for the most part, if your trying to lose weight and your on a strict diet, you probably eat about the same amount of calories every day. The problem with weight fluctuation is because we don't burn the same amount of calories every day so when there's an excess of calories consumed the excess is stored as fat and the scale can increase. It's easy to add up the calories that we consume but much harder to calculate the number of calories we burn. You are burning a different amount every day. It all depends on your activity level that day. So some days we burn more than we consume and some day we burn less than we consume. If you like to weigh-in every day, check your weight first thing in the morning before you eat of drink and do the same thing every day. If you weigh yourself every morning, you probably notice that the number on the scale can change significantly from one day to the next. Sometimes the reason for the...
