Is It Better To Exercise Outdoors?

I found this on Shareware.com, a medical website and it’s worth talking about. I always wonder about the thousands of people who give-up on losing weight. Why would you want to give up. Exercising outdoors can improve your mood and put more oxygen in your blood. Once your accustomed to your exercise routine and want to do it every day, it doesn't make much difference. I exercise outdoors weather permitting, which is different for everyone so don’t worry about it just do the workout.

I know I said it doesn't make much difference, but it does in some cases. I'll explain. Yes, you get more oxygen from the air outdoors, but if you're a runner, or biker, you don't want to breath in a lot of exhaust fumes or air pollutant. I feel where I live, I like to be out before the traffic builds.

Some just get bored or distracted easily indoors, some people just have other commitments that come up. Some people get sick, and some get discouraged when they don’t loss any weight. About getting discouraged, exercise might help you to lose weight, but you can't exercise away a bad diet. What's a bad diet? If you have too much fat around the waist you are on a bad diet. What too much? For example, if you are 70 inches tall, your waist should be 35 inches or less, that's half your height.

I like the outside workout because of air quality, and atmosphere. I like to bike which can do indoors with the new equipment and I do when it's raining, but outdoors I don't think about the time, I think about the sky, the grass, the trees, and the birds. I know not everyone lives somewhere near a park, but that's what keeps me biking.

The outdoor workout can keep you inspired. It’s a fact that people who exercise outdoors stay with the program longer, loss more weight and are happier. I know you can’t always be outdoors but try to exercise outdoor whenever possible. Breathing in clean, fresh air can put more oxygen in your blood and make you feel better. Air conditioning is no substitute for fresh air. But when I have no choice, I go to the mall before they open and do some stretching, jogging, and some exercises.

Why Outdoor Workouts Work Better
Pounding away on a treadmill under fluorescent lights in a stuffy gym couldn’t sound any less appealing. Until now. This workout choice may be holding your health back.

That’s what exercise guru Tina Vindum, author of Outdoor Fitness, believes. In her book, she references several studies that suggest exercising in a natural environment is better for your mood and your health. If you like yoga, a lot of classes are outdoors in the parks, or on the beach.

On mood . . . one study found that outdoor joggers and bikers produced more of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin and had less anxiety and depression than folks who ran on indoor treadmills. Not a runner? Do this instead to hike up your happiness.

On health . . . in another study, patients recovering from surgery needed less pain medication when their rooms had views of natural surroundings. And in a prison study, inmates with a view of sky, trees, and grass had significantly fewer headaches, digestive problems, and trips to the infirmary. Where does it hurt? Get tips for dealing with pain.

Onward and Outward
Vindum believes exercising outdoors — especially in nature — not only takes the boredom out of your workouts but also dramatically enhances vitality, confidence, and fitness.

Personally, I think exercising outdoors allows you to breath in more oxygen which leads to increased vitality and a happier you. I try to run or walk in the Parks and not on the streets or roads.
