Your Pants Don't Lie

Image
I read several posts every day and the one I thought was the best one today was on WordPress.com. The author Banded Girl writes about her battle with weight and her last post is worth a read. “Your pants Don’t lie” and I copied a small part: “so, after all these things happened, i gave up; i started eating more, drinking more, not exercising, eating more than i know is right, and stopped believing in myself. what is the end result.. my pants not buttoning does NOT lie, it speaks the truth. it is UP to me to get back on track. i can say and write what i want to but until i do..actually do something about it.. my pants will continue to tell the truth..” Just that small part of her post gives you an insight into her battle with weight loss. Many of the celebrates that advertise those weight loss products on TV looked good for a while but most of them have gained the weight back. It’s easy to start to cheat after you started to lose weight. You can liken losing weight to stop smoking...

How I Plan Meals

Image
Before I go to work, while I’m having coffee, I plan dinner. If there’s something in the freezer I need I’ll take it out and put it in the refrigerator. Normally, so I remember I always write down the menu and take it with me. If you’re organized enough to do this a day or two ahead then if you’re missing anything from the menu you’ll have time to pick it up. If you learn to stick to the planned menus then you can actually save money on food. It means a few more trips to the store, but the inventory of groceries around the house will start to shrink. This is a good thing and yes the kids need snacks, but this will give you the opportunity to make some healthy choices. When you wait until the last minute to shop, you don’t have time to make the proper choices, you end up buying anything just to get out quick. I wish I could count the times I nearly got run over going to the checkout line. Fruit is a great snack food, it has sugar but its good sugar, its natural sugar. It...

Seniors, Don't Give Up< It's Not Too Late

Image
I’ve received emails lately from seniors that don’t seem to think they can't lose weight anymore. We can all lose weight at any age. We can all exercise at any age. You just need to start moving. Change what you're eating and start walking more. Seniors have a couple of problems losing weight. First, as you get older you lose some of the good bacteria in your digestive system which means that more of your food is not being digested. It’s being stored as fat. Cut down portions as you get older. Second and more important, I think, as we age and gain weight over time, we lose the ambition to be active. If you are gaining weight as you age, your feet, knees and hips are starting to ware down causing pain. Also, arthritis is setting into joints making them stiff. Once these effects start to change your body most people loss the willingness to maintain their body and that’s when you will truly become a senior. This doesn’t have to happen to you. Actually, as you age you should be l...

Have You Heard Of The M-Plan?

Image
Personally, I don’t like these diet plans that guarantee you’ll lose weight. But if it doesn’t cost anything, why not. Diet Plans don’t work for everyone and some plans only have a small percentage of success. I think we all know that young people can lose weight quicker. And extra fat that you’ve only picked up recently is much easier to lose than old fat (fat that you’ve had for years). Also, women have a harder time losing weight than men. So those differences are the reason every individual has to find a method that works for them. Also, remember that the longer you have had the fat the longer it takes to lose it. If you’re looking for the latest celebrity fad diet craze, here it is the M-Plan Diet. According to countless fashion and gossip magazines, this is the diet that celebrities like Katy Perry and Kelly Osbourne are using to lose weight in 14 days. And according to those same sources, the weight loss program helps you lose weight from your hips and thighs but not from your b...

How Processed Foods Affect Your Health

Image
The post is from VeryWell.com and discusses a disturbing trend. I know the food in the picture looks pretty healthy, but those  spinach leaves and the Swiss cheese maybe the only things that may be considered to be healthy. Evern the wheat bread has a lot of chemicals baked in and though it might be better than white bread, but that doesn't mean that store bought bread is healthy.  Recently, I was meeting a friend at a park over lunch, and I noticed a really disturbing trend. Almost everyone there was opening a package or box for their lunch. As you are probably aware, multiple concerns have been raised about processed foods, including the abundance of processed foods and the dangers they pose. In fact, in a recent study, more than 60 percent of the food purchased annually in America is highly processed. As evidence mounts linking over-consumption of these products to major health consequences, highly processed foods are becoming a concerning trend. These findings ...

What's Really Making Us Fat

Image
Have you ever noticed that no matter how hard you try, no matter how much you exercise, or no matter how many calories you cut, you still can’t get rid of the extra fat? There could be another reason for your size. My friend has a twin born at the same time but one guy’s bigger and still is 40 years later. The bigger brother is overweight and the smaller one is thin and fit. The overweight brother can’t seem to lose the extra fat. At a family gathering, they always eat the same amount of food but the smaller one never gains weight. So what’s going on is pretty normal for siblings. I’ve read a lot about families with some overweight members and some thin members.  Research shows that we are all different even when we’re twins. So even if we look the same, we all process our food differently. It’s your DNA that’s different. DNA is in every gene that you were born with and siblings from the same parents won’t have exactly the same DNA. So in that respect, we are all different. Science...

Low Fat vs. Low Carb Which Is Better?

Image
Which Is Better for Weight Loss? By  Yasmine Ali, MD There are so many diets out there for weight loss, it is hard to know where to start and which to choose. Some recent research helps shed light on the long-running low-fat vs. low-carb debate. Rethinking Low-Fat A number of studies have now shown that low-fat diets may not be the best choice when it comes to weight loss, or even when it comes to preventing cardiovascular disease. One study that looked at weight-loss results in individuals following either a low-fat or low-carb diet for a year found that those who followed the low-carb diet lost nearly 8 pounds more than those who followed the low-fat diet. Importantly, those on a low-carb diet also saw a greater reduction in cholesterol-based cardiovascular risk factors. In a review of over 50 clinical trials that have examined the low-fat vs. low-carb question, researchers concluded that evidence from randomized controlled trials“does not support low-fat diets over other dietary...

A Guide To Eating Out

Image
The restaurant scene is a hodgepodge of thousands of different types, different names and different cuisines all fighting for your business. They have to make good tasting food at a reasonable price. It’s only recently that healthy foods have become important to the consumer. So important that restaurants have to put something healthy on the menu. The problem or better yet the challenge for restaurants is to make healthy food taste good. The problem with healthy food has always been that it’s bland, not much flavor. You can’t cream it, or sauté it, that wouldn’t be healthy. You can’t tenderize the meat, that would add calories. So restaurants have come up with a small amount of foods on the menu that are healthy and that gets them off the hook. They can still offer the standard menu of tasty entrees with 1200 or 1500 calories but critics can’t say there’s no healthy food on the menu. Many restaurants offer delicious, heart-healthy meals. These tips will help you make eating out hea...

Don't Take Good Health For Granted

Image
I think we all take our health for granted until we finally realize you’re going downhill. You have to do something and you know it. The problem is most people wait too long, and then they have a big job ahead of them. These last few years we should have all learned a valuable season. Many people got Covid and many people died, but the ones that suffered through the illness should know now how important it is to keep the body healthy. Most illnesses and even Covid can be only a mild cold if your body is healthy enough to fight off germs and other illnesses.  I'm sure you see these people at work that never seem to get sick and never seem to miss a day. How do they do it? you might ask. Healthy people have to work at staying healthy. It's not just good genes. Living a healthy lifestyle is not just the way you're born. It's more than that.  When you’re young and athletic you can take your good health for granted. You don’t have to work at it, your active athletic lifestyl...
