For You Exercise Fanatics

My Wife and I are just like you, working out as much as time allows. So when she found this post on “Gizmodo.com” I thought I better post it.

But before you read any further, some exercise is good for weight loss but too much can do the opposite. Exercise fanatics tend to eat more calories and can actually gain some weight in the short term. 

A new study found that mouthwash cancels out some benefits of exercise. Most of us exercise to build muscle and burn more body fat, but exercise has many other benefits. Most important is the benefit to your heart. By doing regular exercise, you will lower your resting heart rate, and lower your blood pressure. Both of those benefits are said to add to longevity.

So what does that have to do with mouthwash, you might ask. Well, mouthwash will kill the bacteria in your mouth, which you might think is a good thing, but some of the bacteria are good bacteria.

When you exercise your body produces more “nitric oxide” in your saliva and because of exercising you are dilating your blood vessels the nitric oxide is absorbed into the bloodstream and works to lower your blood pressure and it will remain lower for several hours after your workout.

The problem is that nitric oxide is a good bacteria that mouthwash will kill whenever you use it. Besides nitric oxide, your mouth has other good bacteria that help digest food and we also kill them with mouthwash.

So what does one do about mouth odor? I can only tell you what I do. First, you should know that the test was done with anti-bacterial mouthwash and that will kill all bacteria regardless. You can look for alternates, a mouthwash that’s not “antibacterial”. A few years ago articles were written about anti-bacterial soap that kills all bacteria, good and evil, and that we shouldn’t use it and now it’s mouthwash.

I have also searched the web to find food I can eat to freshen my breath. Our bodies are built to care for themselves and by taking care of your body it will take care of you.
