Your Diet Can Add Years To Your Life

Image
We all have the ability to live healthier, stronger, and longer lives simply by eating the most nutritious foods for our bodies. The importance of good nutrition cannot be overstated. I have personally seen how an optimal diet can prevent and reverse disease. I have written books about the therapeutic power the right foods can have on such problems as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, asthma, autoimmune illnesses (including lupus) and headaches. I firmly believe that few people can expect to have good health without paying attention to the consumption of high micronutrient foods. The latest scientific advances in nutritional research continue to provide evidence in support of these facts. The latest to shine a spotlight on the necessity of a superior diet is a new group of data released by The Global Burden of Disease study. It is a huge, ongoing project collecting data in 188 countries. An international research team evaluates studies on each of 79 modifiabl

Diet Buddies

Image
Yes, there is such a thing as a "diet buddy". When someone has a hard time sticking to a diet, after quitting your diet several times, you might be tempted to look for someone to give you "moral support". I know it sounds like a good idea but the success ratio is pretty bad. I know that sounds discouraging but it's the truth. A blogger on WordPress that I try to read pretty often wrote about this very subject and at the end of her post it said, "If you're looking for that special someone to give you the encouragement to stick with it, simply look in the mirror." Wow, real words of wisdom. I think by this time you have probably guessed that I'm not in favor of "diet buddies" or "exercise buddies". For some unknown reason we never seem to pick the right person and after a few weeks, they are finding excuses not to show up or not to continue "being there for you". Or worst of all, they are the one that ends up ne

Even One High-Fat Meal Can Damage Your Liver

Image
This is a good article. I wrote about this in an e-book I published. A high-fat meal can overload your liver. What that means is that once the liver has a high percentage of fat to process, the liver will slow down. The liver can become loaded to the point where it oozes fat from it's pores like your skin when it sweats. This allows unprocessed fat to enter the blood stream. People need to realize that when your body is adding fat around your waist something is wrong. The body is not working properly. Over time, rapid effect of 'fat loading' meals could contribute to disease, researchers say. By Randy Dotinga HealthDay Reporter Eating a high-fat meal -- say, a cheeseburger and fries or a pepperoni pizza -- disrupts liver function, a new, small study reveals. Researchers found that the high levels of saturated fat found in such rich foods immediately alter the work of the liver, possibly setting the body up for serious disease down the line. "The effects

Is Your Diet Making You Hungry?

Image
It’s just a few weeks into the new year, and already many people are struggling to keep their weight loss resolutions. Why do so many well-intentioned dieters give up so soon? In a word: hunger. Cutting back on calories – not to mention boosting exercise – can increase your appetite and hunger, making it harder to stick with your resolve. But there’s a secret weapon that can help fill you up without weighing you down,  fiber!  Although fiber may not seem very glamorous, a growing number of celebrities and CEOs swear by it – and science backs them up. Why fiber? It helps you feel fuller for longer, cleans you out, lowers blood sugar, and it’s calorie-free. Though the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends a daily minimum of 25 g of fiber for women and 38 g for men, most adults get only a paltry 15 grams of daily fiber in their diet. But according to a recent study reported in the  Annals of Internal Medicine , boosting your daily intake could have big benefits. The study fo

Over 40 and can't lose weight

Image
This post is from VeryWell.com and points to a problem that women have. When I was young enough to think that the age of 40 was prehistoric, I was convinced that the worst thing about getting old was becoming dull and boring - Having supper at 5:00, clipping toenails to the dusty voices of ancient news anchors on  60 Minutes , nagging people to put chew with their mouths closed and turn off the lights when you leave the room, for Pete's sake! Now, of course, I know what really happens when you get old.  Sure you get dull and boring (which probably isn't the case!), but something worse happens: Sudden, instant weight gain. It happens deep in the night, just after your 40th birthday. The Middle-Age Fairy creeps into your room and loads an extra 5 or 10 pounds right around your belly. This mysterious fat not only appears without warning, it's also immune to both diet and exercise. What happens to our bodies after 40 is a trifecta, maybe even a superfecta, of weight

Trying To Maintain?

Tricks to Prevent Weight Gain Put Your Go-To Foods On Repeat Decide which healthy meals and snacks you love, then go ahead and eat them as often as you like. "Relying on the same nutritious foods over and over is an easy way to keep your weight steady because it takes all the guesswork out of the process. Plus, you're more likely to practice portion control with foods you eat all the time, research from the University at Buffalo shows. In the study, women who had macaroni and cheese daily consumed less of it over time than those who ate it just once a week. Researchers believe the novelty wears off when you eat a food daily, so you end up eating less. But don't confuse an eat-and-repeat strategy with being resigned to the exact same breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks every single day. Instead of a completely regimented (and boring) routine, simply have a rotation of foods that you enjoy, you know are good for you, and keep you satisfied and ha

Reason We Need To Get Off Junk Food

Image
pp Dwight Eschliman/Getty Images Question:  If junk food is so bad for the body and bad quality overall, why is it so popular? You'd think no one would touch it." Answer:  That's an excellent question, and I certainly can't say that I have the answer. I do have some thoughts on the subject -- and maybe one or more are correct, so here goes: First, let me back up and define 'junk foods.' It's the stuff you eat that has little to no nutritional value, usually combined with ingredients that are bad for you, or is high in calories when consumed in excess. So that means candy, chips, cookies, cake, sugary soft drinks, greasy burgers, hot dogs, French fries, ice cream, and most things that served at fast food restaurants qualify as junk foods. So why do so many people eat junk foods? Here are three possible reasons: #1 It's Cheap I think one big reason junk food is popular is because a lot of it is cheap to buy. I mean you can go to most any
