What Is Visceral Fat And How Dangerous Is It?

Image
A great post from VeryWell.com tells us about the different fats in our body and which ones are dangerous to our health. Read all of this one, stomach fat is what causes your health problem when you age. If you intend to see your grandchildren grow up and maybe get married, the best advice I can give you is to stay thin and eat well. Good food is more expensive but you don’t have to eat as much. Visceral fat is adipose tissue (fat tissue) that surrounds your vital organs. Visceral adipose tissue is located deep inside your body and is sometimes referred to as belly fat. If you have too much visceral fat, you may be at higher risk for certain health conditions and diseases. Belly fat will double your risk for diseases and cancer that affect your organs. The Definition of Visceral Since visceral fat is often called belly fat, you might wonder why we use the term “visceral” to describe it. The reason is that there are two different kinds of fat in your belly and visceral fat is only one o...

Why Can't I lose Weight?

Image
I get the question every week from someone. “Why can’t I lose weight? What am I doing wrong? I understand the frustration. Before I reached my goal of 160 pounds and that wasn’t really my goal, I just wanted to lose body fat. I didn’t know what weight I’d end up at. But once I fell below 160 and I knew I hadn’t been that low since high school, and I was 70 years old, it was time to stop losing weight and start building muscle. This is a 1200 word post, you might want to save it and read it when you have time. I was the king of yo-yo diets. Over 30 years, I gained and lost more weight than I can count. I started at 220 pounds back when I was around 35 years old. I’d lose some weight because I cut back on some foods and I was able to keep off some weight, but the progress I was making was very slow. It took me about 10 years to get down to 185 and maintain that weight. Yes, I was still yo-yo-ing but now I just weighed less. About 180 pounds was the plateau I couldn’t break. I stayed ...

Losing Weight Isn't Like Maintaining

Image
You can get discouraged when you’re trying to lose weight and you see thin and fit people eating more than you and you still can’t lose weight. Losing weight requires you to eat fewer calories than your body burns. This is the complicated part of losing weight. “How many calories does my body burn in one day?”  Most people will get this question wrong. Everyone’s different, women are different from men and your size also matters. The more body fat you have the fewer calories you burn. That’s a general statement, so I’ll explain, let’s take two men or two women that weigh the same, one of the two will have more body fat, the one with more fat will burn calories slower. So, what’s the difference in how I burn calories? Well, if you burn calories slower than your friend, you will burn fewer calories per day. This means you have to eat fewer calories per day or you’ll gain more fat. Maybe your friend is more physical than you. You work at a desk all day and your friend works in a wareh...

Is A Plant-based Diet Better For Your Health?

Image
(HealthDay News) -- Want to be good to your ticker? Load up on veggies — especially beans, Italian researchers recommend. They've published a comprehensive review of research on eating habits and  heart disease  that provides consistent evidence that eating less salt and animal  proteins  and more plant-based foods are associated with a lower risk of heart disease.  Those good-for-you foods include  whole grains , fruits, veggies, legumes, and nuts. The researchers also recommend replacing butter and other animal fats with non-tropical vegetable fats, such as olive oil. "A mistake we made in the past was to consider one dietary component the enemy and the only thing we had to change," said study author Gabriele Riccardi of the University of Naples Federico II, in Italy. "Instead, we need to look at  diets  as a whole and if we reduce the amount of one food, it is important to choose a healthy replacement." The findings were published July 7 in...

Are You "Obese"?

Image
Most Americans still think Obesity is for the seriously overweight, those people that are 400 pounds or more. It’s not true if your body mass is 30% fat you’re considered to be Obese. I found this post in a newsletter I received the other day. (HealthDay News) — Obesity is nearly three times more deadly for men than it is for women, new research suggests. In a study of nearly 4 million men and women around the globe, the risk of dying before the age of 70 was 19 percent for men and 11 percent for women of normal weight. But that risk jumped to 30 percent and 15 percent, respectively, for obese men and women. That’s an absolute increased risk of 11 percent for men and 4 percent for women, the researchers reported. Why do women have less risk? Women are able to carry more because they can give childbirth. Their system protects them almost all their lives from weight problems. “Obesity is second only to smoking as a cause of premature death in America,” said lead researcher Richard Pe...

Are You Always Tired?

Image
Tired. Drained. Pooped. No matter how you phrase it, your beat and need to drum up some energy. Generally reported by more women than men, sluggishness can be caused by many things. But experts say poor nutrition is a big culprit. “Food is truly our body’s fuel,” says Cindy Moore, director of nutrition therapy for The Cleveland Clinic. “What we choose as our fuel is going to absolutely impact the performance of our bodies.” Here’s what the experts have to say about making sure your body gets the right fuel when it needs it. The Forgotten Meal At the beginning of the day, most people dash off to work or school without a thought to their body’s dietary needs. Who has time to eat in the morning anyway? Mary Ellen Camire, PhD, professor of food science and human nutrition at the University of Maine says, “Breakfast is an easy meal to forget. But if people are skipping breakfast and find they’re tired by midmorning, then it’s time to re-evaluate breakfast.” Research shows breakfast improves...
