What's In Your Food ?

Image
This is an article I found in HealthDay recently, it's definitely worth a read. Your over-weight problem may be caused by food additives. Fructose -- a kind of sugar found in a wide variety of foods and beverages --may encourage overeating. Fructose may be best known to consumers in the form of high-fructose corn syrup, which has long been added to manufactured foods from sodas to cookies. Distinct from sugar known as glucose (produced by the natural breakdown of complex carbohydrates), fructose is also a "simple" sugar and a natural component of fruit. However, "in a series of studies we have found that when compared to glucose, the simple sugar, fructose, is a weaker suppressor of brain areas that help control appetite and the motivation to eat," said study co-author Dr. Kathleen Page, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In other words, people are more likely to rem...

Stop Eating The Wrong Foods

Did You know that less than 3% of Americans are physically fit? I don't mean the ones who are trying to get fit, I'm talking about the people who are physically fit. The stats are sad and I hate to think about it. The cost of not being healthy is over $100,000 per person in a lifetime, plus the fact that overweight people are not as productive and on average earn less money over their lifetime. Overweight people will pay more for health insurance over their lifetime, they will see the doctor more often, they will take more sick days, and they will take more medications over their life and all of this will cost the average person more money and is costing the taxpayer more money in taxes because of those people who can't afford to pay. For those people who have been trying to lose weight and always regain the weight and never seem to lose the fat, there is hope. Anyone can lose the fat and keep it off. Losing fat is the key to good health. The only people who fail to lose fa...

Weight Loss Basics

Image
Losing weight is a balancing act between the number of calories you eat and the number of calories you burn. For example, women depending on height should stay in a range of 1500 to 2000 calories a day. A man depending on height can consume say 1800 to 2500 calories. Those estimates will depend on your age and activity levels and how much you workout. Weight loss comes down to burning more calories than you eat. This is important, you can’t exercise away a lot of calories. A normal workout, say a combination of running and walking for an hour, will only burn about 300 calories and that’s based on someone who is experienced at this type of workout. Someone new at this type of routine might only burn 100 calories. If your counting your calorie intake and don’t forget the drinks, You can balance the "consumption to burn" ratio by cutting back on sugary beverages or maybe snacks. Once you understand the equation, you’re ready to set your goals. Remember you don’t have to do this ...

The Only Yogurt You Should Eat

Image
Did you know that almost ALL yogurts are flat-out bad news for your waistline? "Light" yogurts, for instance, are absolutely terrible for you, and for more reasons than one. First, most "light" yogurts are loaded with artificial sweeteners and/or high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is one of the top 3 WORST ingredients you could ever consume. First, as its name suggests, it's made of primarily fructose, a sugar that easily spills over to fat storage when consumed in sizable quantities. And artificial sweeteners are...well...artificial. Do you really want to put chemically altered, man-made ingredients that don't exist in nature into your body? Us either. Second, HFCS is made from genetically modified corn. Third, HFCS spikes blood sugar and insulin-like almost no other food or ingredient.  Bad news all around. Bottom line, just because something is low calorie (i.e. "Light") doesn't make it a healthy choice, or even a choi...

Increasing Muscle Mass Linked To A Longer Life

Image
This is a great article, it confirms the same things I write about. Losing body fat is a big part of being healthy and doing exercise while you diet can speed up the weight loss and I've written about this before, exercise has a two-fold purpose. You're speeding up your metabolism when you exercise and you're increasing your muscle mass. Now increasing muscle mass does two things. First, your body burns calories even if you do nothing. Muscle mass will burn more calories than fat. So by increasing your muscle weight and reducing the weight of your fat you actually will burn more calories just doing your normal routine. And as this article explains the more muscle and the less fat you have, the longer you'll live. HealthDay Reporter The more muscle older adults have, the lower their risk of death, according to a new study. Researchers analyzed data from more than 3,600 older adults who took part in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1988 an...

Do You Need Help Losing Weight?

It’s up to you to take charge of your health. You should know if you weigh too much, if you out of shape, or have too much body fat. That’s something children don’t learn, how to take care of themselves, how to take care of their health. Why is it that we don’t know that we’re not in good health or that we weigh too much? First of all, I think we do know but too often we ignore the signs. If a person has colds frequently or feels exhausted and has no energy, that’s a good sign that something is missing in their diet. Most of us reach for vitamin supplements for the answer, but what most people need is to examine their diet. Be truthful with yourself and start to keep a log of what you eat. After one week, I think you’ll know what’s wrong with your diet. Some people already know their diet is their problem but just don’t know where to start or don’t want to take the time to change. For example, I think we all know that fast food isn’t really a healthy choice. But every day we line up at...
