Losing Weight At Any Age Helps Your Heart

Image
In order to keep body tissue alive your heart has to pump blood to all your tissue including body fat. The bigger you are the harder your heart has to work trying to supply blood to all of you. The following article is about a long term study done in the U.K.. I’ve never found a study of so many people for this long a period. Healthy weight loss at any time in adulthood is good for your heart, a new study indicates. "Our findings suggest that losing weight at any age can result in long-term cardiovascular health benefits, and support public health strategies and lifestyle modifications that help individuals who are overweight or obese to lose weight at all ages," according to lead study author John Deanfield, of University College London. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 1,300 men and women in the United Kingdom who were followed since their birth in March 1946. The participants were classified as being either normal weight, overweight or obese when they were chi...

Eat Smart And You Will Lose Weight

Image
At parties we need to eat smart. Anytime we eat-out, parties or just dinner with friends, we can easily load up on calories without realizing it. Forget the chips and go for the vegetable tray. Try not to drink calories or at least keep it to a minimum. I avoid big meals and I don't eat late. I try to eat something small every 3 hours to prevent getting hungry. There are plenty of famous-name diets for weight loss, but none stands out from the pack when it comes to lasting results, a new review suggests. Looking at a dozen clinical trials, researchers found that three big-name diets -- Atkins, Weight Watchers and the Zone -- were all "modestly" effective over the course of a year. In studies that compared the plans head-to-head, people lost anywhere from 4 to 10 pounds, on average. Meanwhile, a fourth commercial diet -- South Beach -- was no better than traditional advice to eat a low-fat diet, the study authors said. And in the few trials that lasted two years -- a...

When Is The Best Time To Exercise

Image
The Best Time of Day to Exercise to Lose Weight We are firm believers that exercise should be a part of a daily healthy lifestyle no matter what your end goal is. It keeps the mind alert, the muscles fresh, and the heart ticking properly. However, if your end goal is to shed a few pounds while you’re at it, you may be wondering the best time of day to exercise. Here’s a piece from the New York Times about a study done regarding weight loss focused workouts.  You're probably wondering, "what difference does it make"? It will make a difference if you're trying to lose body fat. I've read several articles on exercise and the consensus as I see it is that morning, afternoon, or evening doesn't really matter. It depends on your schedule. The important thing is that you stick to the same time of the day and don't over exercise the same muscle group.   You might try setting your wake-up alarm earlier and exercising before breakfast. There is some evidence...

Changing Your Life Will Help You Lose Weight, That's The Bonus

Image
I wrote before about making a lifestyle change as a way to lose weight.  There has been much written about the Mediterranean Diet, it's not a real diet with set rules about your everyday meals. It's a lifestyle of eating the way Mediterranean people have been eating for centuries. On the front page of my website, I write about the Mediterranean lifestyle of eating in the diet section. When I gave up on diet plans that you buy in packets at the grocery store and decided I wasn't going to sweat the pounds off. I read a book on the Mediterranean Diet and it all started to make sense to me. The suggested foods are in the diagram above. Cutting back on the food I was eating, only made me hungry after an hour or so. I needed to change my eating habits totally. I stopped eating traditional meals, no more 3 meals a day. Now I was going to eat 6 times a day. So you might ask, how do I lose weight that way.? Good question. The Idea is to only eat enough to stop the cravings....

The Truth About Diets

Image
Big dieting names like Atkins, Ornish and Weight Watchers have long competed in the battle of the bulge. But a new analysis concludes that whichever diet people choose, their chances of success are about the same. For years, people seeking to shed weight have heard conflicting messages about the best route: Low fat? Low carb? Low glycemic index? The analysis, published in the  Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests it doesn't matter much. Across 48 clinical trials of more than 7,000 people on diets like Atkins, Zone, Ornish and South Beach, researchers found minimal differences in average weight loss. Instead, experts said, the old-fashioned advice to cut calories, rather than specific nutrients, seems key to success -- as is burning more calories through exercise. And ultimately, the "best" diet for any individual is the one he or she can live with long-term, according to Linda Van Horn, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern Univers...

The "Eat Clean Diet"

Image
Forget counting calories. Your ticket to a lean, healthy body is “eating clean,” says Tosca Reno, author of The Eat-Clean Diet series. She means eating foods -- like lean protein, good-for-you carbs and fats, fresh fruits, and vegetables -- six times a day in the right amounts. Do that, drink lots of water, and exercise regularly, and Reno says you’ll turn your sluggish metabolism into a fat-burning machine. This might sound a little crazy eating 6 times a day but I did try it and it worked for me. The idea is that you maintain a level blood sugar count without any spikes. This will keep you from eating big meals and over time you will shrink your stomach. I is normal to overeat a little the first couple of weeks but after that your body will adjust to the food and you will start losing inches. Dedicate yourself to the clean eating lifestyle, and you’ll lose about 3 pounds a week, Reno says. The benefits go beyond weight loss. You'll stay healthy and have more energy. Your ey...

Should I Cut Out Sugar To Lose Weight?

Image
Sugar is Poison. Sugar is going to kill you. Sugar makes you fat.  Do these lines sound familiar? From books to TV shows to the Internet, we have heard it all. It seems that extreme messages such as these are what catches people’s attention. The latest is that sugar has been linked to Cancer. Perhaps it’s the wow-factor, or maybe it’s the simple idea that cutting out one thing from your diet will help you lose weight. To be honest, though, cutting out an entire group of foods is not that simple. And whether you are trying to lose weight or not, it’s usually not the best idea for your body and mind. There are frankly several more pieces to this nutrition puzzle. Will Eating Sugar Prevent Weight Loss?  In a word,  no , sugar itself will not prevent weight or fat loss. In fact, sugar  is  glucose, and glucose happens to be the preferred energy source of our bodies. It also primarily comes from carbohydrates. We all need glucose for our organs to func...
