What Is Fatty Liver Disease

Image
I don’t often write about diseases but when you have a fatty liver the Liver will not function properly and you will continue to add fat. It’s important that if you want to lose body fat, you have to understand how your Liver works. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, or NAFLD, is on the rise in the United States thanks to a huge increase in obesity rates over the last three decades. In industrialized countries, 20 to 40 percent of the general population has some form of fatty liver disease, and the chances of its progressing increase with age. Officially recognized as a disease in the early 1980s, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease perplexed the medical community. Obese and diabetic patients had elevated liver enzymes and enlarged livers virtually identical to those typically seen in alcoholics, but most of them insisted they were not drinking excessively. Liver Function Basics The liver is your largest internal organ. It performs hundreds of functions including: processing everything y...

The Mysteries Of Weight Loss

Image
So you’re finally ready to lose weight. Now the question is: How? The standard advice — to eat less and move more — isn’t so helpful when it comes to the “how.” You probably know you need to cut calories, but how many? Are you better off getting those calories from low-fat or low-carb foods? And what’s going on with your metabolism, your personal energy-burning furnace? Is it programmed to keep you overweight? Is there any way to fan the flames so you can dream of one day eating a piece of pie without gaining a pound? Even science is still stumped on many of the basic questions of weight loss. “Amazingly, in this era of obesity, there are still many things that we really don’t know,” says Robin Callister, PhD, professor of human physiology at the University of Newcastle in Australia. Here’s what we do know about some of the most persistent mysteries of weight loss. Do You Have to Cut 3,500 Calories to Lose a Pound? The idea that dieters need to cut this many calories — with diet,...

What is Fatty Liver Disease?

Image
This is about weight loss, for those who can’t seem to lose weight this might be one of the causes. So what does the liver have to do with my weight, you might ask. Your liver processes the fat in your food before it can enter the blood stream and also determines what needs to be disposed of. But, it can only process a few grams at one time. So what does that mean? For example, if you’re eating out and buy a hamburger with fries, say a quarter pound, it might contain more grams of fat than the liver can process so the excess is stored in fat cell and you gain fat. The Liver is like a sponge and can become saturated with fat which occurs when 30% or more of the weight of your Liver is fat. After saturation occurs the liver slows down all it’s function and you keep adding more body fat at every meal. I don’t often write about diseases but when you have a fatty Liver the Liver will not function properly and you will continue to add fat. It’s important that if you want to lose body f...

The Things That Effect Your Weight

Image
Your “genetic makeup” plays the biggest role in who and what you are. These are the things we get from our ancestors. Colors of our eyes, our height, our basic body size, and weight, also the way our brain works, and the way our body stores fat. Now that last one is important if you want to lose fat. I’m talking about the way fat is distributed through your body. For example, if your mother back when she was 18 to 20 years of age, might have been slim but after having a child she started to put on pounds from her waist down to her knees. Then if you start to put on extra pounds you could do the same. Of course, that will depend on which parent you favor. Your bone structure is also genetic; if your mom and dad both had short legs then probably you also will. So you can see what I’m getting at. Losing weight won’t fix everything. So now we know we can’t fix everything, but we can lose excess fat. You remember your parents and grandparents when they were already aging and maybe you ...

Lose Weight Fast

Image
How can I lose weight fast? The whole idea is to control blood sugar levels and avoid food cravings. You will still be eating fewer calories than you do now and you’ll be eating healthier. Yes, today anyone preaching weight loss will tell you to eat every 2 to 3 hours to avoid cravings. It’s cravings that cause you to “impulse eat” and eat the wrong things. That’s harder than it sounds if you work all day. If you have a weight problem or maybe too much body fat, you are probably overeating when you do eat. There’s a great article below, written by a working mom who happens to be a Chef and I already know what you're going to say. Well, a Chef can through a meal together in minutes, it takes me forever. If you have a weight problem you're doing it wrong. You do not eat often enough, you're eating the wrong foods and when you're eating a meal, you eating too much. When I first started to eat frequent meals, I was eating 6 meals a day, but not the size meals you might thin...

Weight Loss And Body Mass Index (BMI)

Image
I write about the   body mass index   a lot and anyone on a diet should understand this. Your Doctor and any weight counselor you talk to will always refer to your BMI, so you need to know at least the basics. So, what is body mass? What does that mean? If you subtract the weight of your bones the remainder of your weight is your body mass. And medical science says that the percentage of body fat should be in relation to your weight and height. Medical science says that too high a percentage of fat slows down body functions. So, the British came up with a simple method to determine BMI. This method has been used for more then 50 years. Today we know there are several flaws in the calculations. First, it doesn't whole true for everyone. Studies of athletes that have extra muscle mass will weigh more than the average person of the same height. That shows a higher than normal BMI for a person with less than normal body fat. But the whole idea is still  basically right...

All About Breakfast

Image
How often have you heard that eating breakfast boosts your metabolism? It might seem logical that eating a meal first thing in the morning gets your metabolism revved up, but the fact is that there’s no evidence to prove it actually does. In fact, scientists are clear about the benefits of breakfast and a boost in metabolism isn’t one of them. Breakfast and Metabolism: What Scientists Say When it comes to scientific studies and metabolism, researchers agree that the science is inconclusive: there’s no research showing a direct link between breakfast and a better metabolism. In a recent conference, members of the American Society for Nutrition met to discuss how eating frequency affects our weight. They evaluated a wide range of studies that investigated meal frequency, weight, and metabolism. Their conclusion? Since eating habits are very hard to study, research hasn’t been able to establish a clear link to an increased metabolism. In fact, they found no data ...

Losing Weight And Keeping It Off

Image
Losing weight in theory is pretty simple, be mindful of what you’re eating and increase your activity. Why do most of us have trouble doing just that? First, I think that most of us were raised to eat the way we eat and that makes it difficult to change. Second, in spite of the fact that 2/3 of adults in this country are overweight, most of us don’t think they have a weight problem.  Being overweight will catch up with you and over 45 you will realize what being overweight has done to your body. Like most of us in middle age, we try to play catch-up and get on the “live healthy” bandwagon. Some of us can successfully change and we do. Others how might have been in denial for years find it too difficult and end up quitting. I knew I had a weight problem when my waist grew too big. Your waist size is the gauge you should go by. The average height for adult males is 5′ 10″ or 70 inches and your waist should measure 35 inches at the naval and if it’s larger than that you have a problem...

Do I Have To Count Calories

Image
Everyone who diets knows about counting calories. The experts have been telling us forever that all we need to do to lose weight is to eat fewer calories. But is that all it’s about? If that’s all there is to losing weight why are so many people overweight? I know, maybe it’s all about carbs? Or they tell us we have to exercise more or your doing the wrong type of exercise. Not really, the whole idea of the low-carb diet was to get you to eat less junk food. Junk food is 90% carbs and has almost no nutritional value. But low-carb wasn’t the answer because you would cut back on junk for a while but never quit eating junk completely. And low-carb and low-fat foods usually have more sugar to put taste back in the food. So what is the answer to weight loss? I believe that all calories are not equal and that you don’t need to count calories, you need to eat better food. The Atkins Diet is a good example of a healthy balanced diet. Another healthy diet is the Mediterranean diet. Below you’ll...
